Skulls from members of the Mustelidae/weasel family

Biggest to smallest ~ Badger, Otter, Mink, Ferret, Stoat, Weasel

Please Note - I had nothing to do with the death of any of these creatures, all were found already dead

Wow, the ferret skull is alot bigger than I thought it would be! And look at those teeth! I have a ferret, and I never imagined it that way! XD.. Great shot, the lighting/shadowing looks perfect! You sure have alot of animals dying near your house.. 8D..

Neat 8D

Badgers are so mean though! They are just a cranky creature I suppose xD;;;

Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

I used to have a ferret too, they are crazy fun things ^^
its amazing looking at the teeth and hinged jaws of Mustelids

I live in the countryside so you do come across dead things now and again, These have been collected over many years so its not like they have all been found in the last few months, its not that bad for dead things round here XD
:iconpurplejackdaw:
Badgers are not mean, they just do stuff that piss people off I guess XD
Very strong and built like little tanks XD I would not want to get bitten by one
Sadly I've never seen any in the wild, no setts are known of in this area, I found this ones remains in the river, at first I though it was a fox, it was pretty decomposed, only once it had rotted down I seen it was not a fox, I contacted a badger group about it, they had no idea where it might have came from, could have washed down the river from anywhere, they though it could be from an unknown sett somewhere

It's so sharp and clear.

One chased me though for no reason D8 It was scary! I looked around after he was finished chasing me and I wasn't even close to his burro or anything..... I was on a 4-wheeler by the way. I know not all of them are mean xD I guess just that one 9_9 Look now you got me rambling xD;;;

Someone may have had it as a privately owned pet? It happens sometimes and some people don't really know about some animals when they unknowingly purchase something as a pet that probably shouldn't be a pet... If that makes any sense xD

Ok so I have a question... My coyote skull STILL has stuff on it and what should I do with the thing? We set it out in a grassy spot in the sun to get it bleached and everything.... Should I bury it somewhere and check on it after a few weeks?

Hmm ... Badgers.

The crest along the top of the skull is for muscle attachment. You can see from the size of the area that badgers are going to have an extremely powerful bite. Never argue with a badger.

This is an excellent photo, with a lot of depth of field and lighting that shows up both shape and detail. I appreciate the informative artist's comments too. Some pictures come with very little explanation.

Maybe you were in its territory or it might have had young nearby hidden or it could have been ill so acting unusual ?
They are certainly not something you want to get on the wrong side of and they know it

I'm guessing the leftovers on the Coyote skull are dried up/mummified ?
That can happen in warm weather, you could bury it, but you risk possibly losing some teeth in the soil, its what I used to do, but now I have discovered that you can rot/sweat off mummified remnants in a very loosely tied plastic bag (needs to be loose so insects and bacteria can still do their work, but the plastic bag will keep in alot of moisture) and you dont risk losing anything in the soil
I used that method on this skull - [link] it had fully mummified, this skull is in the shot above, as you see it worked a treat ;)
:iconpurplejackdaw:
That and the hinged jaw mean it would no be good to bitten by one at all ^^;
When most people think of predators they think of the Cat/Felidae family or Dog/Canidae family, these skulls show the Mustelidae family should not be overlooked

Thanks ^^
